Bastet was viewed as the protector goddess of Lower Egypt. As protector, she was seen as defender of the pharaoh. She was usually represented as a woman with the head of a domesticated cat and was the goddess of fire, cats, of the home and pregnant women.
Her center of worship was in Bubastis (Per-Bast, Pa-Bast, Pibeseth, Tell-Basta), in the eastern Delta, where more than 300,000 mummified cats were discovered when a temple dedicated to her was excavated.
