Aurel Vlaicu (1882–1913) was a Romanian aviation pioneer and placed Romania on the second place in the world, after France, for the use of military aircraft. Three years before seeing his invention used in World War I, he crashed trying to cross the Carpathian Mountains on his way to a festival.
